About

Artist Statement

We use words all the time rarely perceiving them as physical, aesthetic objects. My paintings, drawings, and letterpress prints combine the verbal and visual to explore the mutability, playfulness, and fluidity of these language systems. The work engages the back and forth between word and image, seeing and reading, abstraction and representation, the ephemeral and the concrete refusing the idea that these categories are fixed and mutually exclusive. The focus becomes the grey area between categories creating an opening for acceptance and inclusion: this and this; and instead of or. I use the modernist grid, grade school sentence diagrams, contrasting painterly styles, and words that break apart into other words as devices to investigate these ideas. I often work in series allowing repeated elements to shift from one piece to another. Sequence is cumulative generating the possibility that readers can see multiplicity and difference in new ways.
